The Institute for Advanced Studies (Institut d’Etudes Avancées – IEA) was created in 2007 at the University of Cergy-Pontoise (UCP) to stimulate scientific collaborations between its researchers and international scientific communities in all major domains. So far, its main activities are to organize thematic cycles on a yearly basis upon selected topics, in parallel with activities of the 23 research laboratories.
The IAS is reorganized in 2013 with an International Advisory Board (IAB) and a network of International Partner Laboratories (IPL). The new organization together with scientific activities is presented in the IAS chart.
The International Advisory Board is consulted on the selection of topics, and invited conference speakers. The IAB also takes part in conference organization (refereeing process of proceeding publication). The International Partner Laboratories of the IAS co-organize with us scientific events and participate in research projects of common interest. Our partnership also aims at stimulating exchanges of researchers, graduate and doctorate students, as well as joint theses supervision.
Visiting professors are members of the IAS for the year they are invited. Permanent and semi-permanent researcher positions will be created.
Two new buildings are under construction to centralize activities of the IAS, one located at the Neuville campus for disciplines in Science and Technology and the other one located at the Chênes campus for Humanities.
With 23 laboratories, two Excellence Laboratories (Labex) and the Institute for Advanced Studies, the University of Cergy-Pontoise is among the most active research centres in France with a high international standard. The University entered into the Shanghai Ranking in 2012 with its mathematics activities. Other laboratories are highly evaluated by the French National Research Evaluation Agency (AERES). Research activities at the University of Cergy-Pontoise can be classified in four categories: Materials Sciences ; Analysis, Modeling and Management of Complex Systems ; Technology of Embedded Intelligence ; Societies, Cultural Transfers and Knowledge Transmission.
LabEx MME-DII - Mathematical and Economic Models for Dynamic, Uncertainty and Interactions
The scientific project of MME-DII pursues two major research objectives. The first one is to develop innovative fundamental models of economic behavior. The second one is to apply these models to various economic and social problems. The first objective occupies a central position in the MME-DII project and is centered on interactions between mathematicians, economists and physicists.
LabEx Patrima - Tangible Heritage: knowledge, Patrimonialisation, Mediation
PATRIMA unites the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences in la Fondation des Sciences du Patrimoine. The purpose of the Foundation is to honour and promote cultural heritage through the development of international research and education programs.
Initiated by the universities of Cergy-Pontoise and Versailles-Saint Quentin in Yvelines, PATRIMA is a unique initiative. It is made up of prestigious cultural institutions including le Musée du Louvre, la Bibliothèque nationale de France, le Musée du Quai Branly, and le Château de Versailles, many major research and restoration laboratories, scientists, historians, and conservationists.

Activities ranging from biomaterials, organic materials, polymers, condensed matter to construction materials in civil engineering. Laboratories ERRMECE, LAMBE, LPMS, LPPI, SOSCO, L2MGC, GEC, I-MAT, LAMAP, LPMS, SATIE constitute this research area with about 150 researchers and doctorate students around several common technological platforms in collaboration with industrial companies.
Analysis, Modelling, Management of Complex Systems
Activities of this theoretical and modelling pole include Mathematics, Theoretical Physics, Theoretical Economy and Management. These activities constitute principal subjects of the following laboratories AGM, LPTM, THEMA and the interdisciplinary Excellence Laboratory MME-DII. This pole gathers about 450 researchers and doctorate students.
Technology of Embedded Intelligence
Activities of this pole aim at incorporating artificial intelligence systems into mobile objects such as robots and drones, studying architecture and indexation of integrated information systems such as cell phones, and improving electronic devices and energy storage in embedded intelligence components. This pole works in close collaboration with regional and national technological competitivity consortia such as Systematic, Astech, Moveo and Cap Digital in connection with companies such as SAFRAN, THALES, SAGEM and VALEO. The pole gathers about 120 researchers and doctorate students, belonging to mainly two laboratories ETIS and SATIE.
Societies, Cultural Transfers and Knowledge Transmission
Activities of this pole focus mainly on the construction of different societies, their governing rules and administrative systems, their cultural identities and their ways of representation and thinking, the organization of their knowledge transmission, formation and communication. Research is also very active on the evolution of writing forms, speeches, aesthetic concepts, ideological schemes, as well as the evolution of artistic productions and history of philosophies. This pole gathers about 150 researchers and doctorate students from laboratories in law, languages, literatures, humanities and education science LEJEP, CPJP, CCIC, CRTF, LDI, MRTE, LDAR, PARAGRAPHE, EMA.
