"On the molecular origin of charge separation in organic solar cells: energy bending versus energy disorder"

Among the great diversity of solar cell technologies, organic solar cells (OSC) are outstanding with respect to their mechanical flexibility and unique optoelectronic tunability. Within the past two-three years the long-lasting dominance of fullerene-based acceptors has been overcome, which has been made possible by the development of new polymeric acceptors and by introducing different strategies to combine donor (D) and acceptor (A) polymers. However, while different mechanisms that could explain this enormous boost in solar cell efficiency have been suggested, comparative studies between their individual impacts are still missing.
